BACKUP YOUR DATA!

BACK UP YOUR DATA!

The statement “Back up your data!” is simple. Self-explanatory even. But we’re all guilty of not doing it as much as we should. Is our data really that important that if we lose it, will we be unaffected or will we be devastated?

First and foremost, most computers will crash (depending on factors such as age, use, etc.).  When this occurs, what’s the first thing that happens? A feeling of stress, panic and even loss of all hope and dreams. What also occurs is a loss of time and money. Each second you are not able to do your work is more revenue that is slipping out the door. It’s a snowball effect from there.

In order to ease the suffering, there are many solutions that can help you get back up and running during the time between the event of such a situation and a new PC.  These are referred to as solutions because they are not considered traditional backups. They are basically file storage which constantly uploads the most current version of files you work with. These files can be anything from word documents to pictures.

Let’s draw a scenario:

Mr. Tyrannosaurus is the head of a medium-sized business. He has a program installed on his machine with its sole purpose being is to monitor his “My Documents” folder. It looks at each file and determines if anything has changed.  Earlier in the morning he was working on a file called Stegosaurus’ TPS Reports.doc and he saved it.

Later that evening at quitting time he logged out of his machine, put on his top hat and monocle, straightened his bow tie and left for the day. During the night a meteor shower destroyed his machine (and most of his friends).

But he’s in luck!  On a server, thousands of miles away, his TPS report is still intact. He can now pull it up even at home and work on it.

Let’s take a look at two options you can use and FOA can help you set up:

Dropbox (www.dropbox.com)

Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere. This means that any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, phones and even the Dropbox website. Dropbox also makes it super easy to share with others, whether you’re a student or professional, parent or grandparent. Even if you accidentally spill a latte on your laptop, have no fear! You can relax knowing that Dropbox always has you covered, and none of your stuff will ever be lost.

SugarSync (www.sugarsync.com)

SugarSync makes it easy to backup, share and access your files, anytime, anywhere. With SugarSync you get online cloud storage for all your files — documents, music, photos, and video. When you make a change or add files on any of your PC or Mac computers, SugarSync automatically syncs your files to the cloud, where you can access them from any Internet-connected device — including your smart phone or iPad.
